Ted Nugent kicked off his 2016 Sonic Baptizm tour last night in Laconia, New Hampshire. After taking last summer off from the road to spend time with his grandchildren, the Motor City Madman is back with a new power trio lineup featuring longtime bassist Greg Smith and drummer Jason Hartless. After the show, Nugent was kind enough to answer a few questions for us about his new band, how he manages to maintain his famous energy levels after more than 6500 shows, and what he does to relax afterwards.

How was tonight’s show?
I just got off stage at Laconia and let me tell you, if I wasn’t in this band I would follow them across the globe to watch them every night! Jason & Greg create the ultimate driving rhythm section that every guitar player dreams of. We were crazy tight, ultra high energy and the songs killed! My guitar tone through my new Blackstar stereo amps is by far the greatest guitar tone I’ve ever had and that is really saying something! It was a phenomenal 6,519th rockout for this old guitar player! My very emotional and spontaneous extended intro to “I Still Believe” from my SHUTUP&JAM! record was extremely moving and I could see it in the eyes of our jamming crowd! I played some insane guitar stuff tonight that I have never played before and I can’t wait to see where this tour takes us! Musical adventure turns me on big time! Hallelujah!

What made you decide to change the band lineup for this tour?
Spontaneous instinctual killer music craving desire! Absolutely love and respect all my amazing musicians all these years, but when Greg Smith and I jammed with Jason Hartless I knew damn well he needed to throttle my drum dreams, so here we go baby! This young monster from Detroit will soon be a world class drummer known by all, just like all my amazing drum monsters like Tommy Aldridge, Michael Cartellone, Mick Brown, Tommy Clufetos and all of them.

Any setlist surprises in store for this tour? Any songs that sound different or particularly awesome with this band?
Surely the intensity of my amazing music and live performances come as no suprize to real music lovers everywhere. I have SO many insane fun songs to perform that they all make the ultimate opening song and ultimate encore song. We can do no wrong!

Sonic Divinity July 20, 2016- Jacksonville FL- The Florida Theatre
Please forgive me Uncle Ted- But prior to this show, I was never able to see you perform- in all of my prior 45 years; I take full responsibility of this, however I do believe this happened for a reason- of ‘intelligent’ design. Last night I made up for those 45 years and what I personally witnessed along with a nearly sold out Florida Theatre - was not a Sonic Baptism of Music but a Sonic Divinity from the rock n roll heavens- that blessed the souls, freed our spirits, and made us feel the power of being alive and well. What I personally witnessed and felt -was the best damn power trio of ballistic, mind melting music I have ever seen from a three piece band (yes I have seen RUSH and Yes I have seen ZZ TOP). No major production, no major light shows, no video screens; three men that plugged in their instruments, used their God given talents, and kicked the living shit out of anything past, present or future. A true wall of sound that made Phil Spector wet his cell. For those of you who don’t know who Phil Spector was or what he did- Google, Phil Spector The Wall of Sound-The Beatles.
Sitting on the ‘skins’- was a then 21 year old flawless Jason Hartless -who kept better time than Einstein, and created the canvas for veteran bass player Greg Smith, who kept syncopated-funk thunder ripping through the Florida Theatre. If you didn’t have rhythm and soul when you walked in, you damn sure did when you left.
With a fortress wall of low, sub sonic booms working in perfect harmony with the various guitars chosen by the master himself, I was reminded very quickly that Ted Nugent was, and still is one of the best guitar players to ever pick up the instrument-and I was graced by the presence of the guitar legend bad-ass himself. 40 years was brought to a single moment of time in which he unleashed an all-out assault of guitar virtuosity that raised Hendrix from the dead, and damn near slaughtered anything I’ve ever experienced in the 45 years of my existence, and what I had come to known. I speak of Ted Nugent ‘The Musician’- The General, The Commander, The Chief and the Guitar Legend himself. The man who does not forget where he came from; the man who pays tribute to the genuine founding fathers of rock n roll, and bleeds each and every note with more soul than some will know in their lifetime.
Ted Nugent took the Florida Theatre on a musical journey last night- baptizing souls with a channel of energy that this world needs more of. It was a fresh reminder of how the wheels of rock n roll moved all of us, and how he has secured his place as one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Since the Amboy Dukes of 1964, Ted Nugent has paved this world a path of good energy, free spirit, and has brought love and joy into this world- using his God given talents in channeling his soul through his music.
Ted Nugent is a living musical legend who split musical time last night. I witnessed it along with rest of the people at the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville. The music industry needs a huge reminder on what a real rock n roll show is- Ted’s prolific, and unyielding paradigms in music are a testament to the true and historical roots of rock roll music; something that sadly -has become endangered in the world today, as we hear it.
This planet and this country is a better place because of you, and the ‘musicians’ or other ridiculous forms of intelligence of today’s ‘era’ - have much to learn; unfortunately – this would require such people to actually take the time to pull their head out of their ass, listen and comprehend what you’re truly speaking through your music. Some people just don’t get it and they never will, they are not physically or mentally capable of it.
Thank you for reminding me where I came from and who I am, Mr. Nugent.
